Update: I don’t think I have ever added an update to a review. This app is so helpful. I’m now doing my multi engine and will do an IPC. This great for getting back up to speed without setting foot in the airplane. My only wish is that the developers add more features. Like full approaches, including an ILS. Best software purchase I have ever made. Sincere thanks.

This app has great ratings, but prior to purchasing I noticed a few bad ones. It was clear the few negative reviewers seem to suffer from either lack of aptitude or crappy phone/tablet syndrome. If you can’t operate this app I suggest not Pursuing a career in aviation. I am a relatively low time pilot and have been out of Instrument currency for over ten years. My current job involves training of Military Pilots and Combat Systems Officers in a VFR program. I have 4500 hours of flight time of which over half is Part 121 flag. I have been considering going back to the airlines and was trying to brush up on VOR orientation and holding. I happened to come across this app and I’m glad I did. Simply put, it’s AMAZING, simple and intuitive, a great way to refresh or build basic VOR procedures. Definitely worth the money.

This app is simply excellent! If you have a few free minutes you can study and improve your VOR skills. The app simplifies things for example you only worry about two dimensions and there’s only standard rate turns which allow you to focus on what actually matters without distraction. I used to use x plane to practice but this app lets you practice on your mobile device and in short time slots this increasing your knowledge.

I used this app to prepare myself for a sim assessment which required only VOR tracking through needles for navigation. This app allowed me to practice tracking, holding and intercepts from all directions and distances. I like that you can choose different wind scenarios and aircraft speeds.

The option to view a map of what you’ve done is a very good feature for learning, it helped me a lot.

My only feedback for improvement would be to add more content on how to specific hold entries or deal with wind corrections. The app does have some, but more content would optimise the app.

Perfect for maintaining instrument proficiency I use this app to both teach students about instrument navigation and to maintain my own proficiency. The app has an extra option of buying an EHSI which is worth the money paid. What sets this app apart from others is the customizeable scenarios that can provide endless opportunities. I use said option to set up IAPs and practice “flying” them on my tablet. My only request is perhaps the addition of an old school VOR indicator to use in conjunction with basic instrument navigation courses. 5 stars!!

The only problem I found is with the RMI during a roll to either side the app becomes slugish so it becomes difficult to be precise exiting the turn to a specific heading. The EHSI is a must.

I took a chance on this app about a month ago. The developer has been very interested and helpful when I had asked for assistance. I’ve kept half my head in the clouds ever since I had to stop mid IFR training in 2002. Along with a light but regular simulation habit to feed the aviation monkey, I’ve tried and bought several “visualizer” IFR apps to keep my lateral navigation skills going should I get a chance to resume training. I’ve gotten more out of VOR Tracker in a month than all the others combined. I bought VOR Tracker as a holding re-education tool. By that measure, it paid for itself the day I bought it. I learned by zeroing the wind and hitting the pause button a lot. Since then, it honed my hold entry skills beyond where they were when I was actually flying! I don’t need to pause anymore. To the contrary, I can visualize and plan the hold with airspeed maxed out at 230 and with fast mode engaged (<2x clock speed) with time to spare before reaching the fix. What a confidence booster! It’s effective because the most demanding cognitive tasks occur during a minute fraction of the time it takes to practice holding in the real world. VOR Tracker may not be marketed as a traditional “flight sim.” True, it’s not fully controllable. User input is limited to a count up timer and the ability choose level flight or to toggle a realistic rate of roll into or out of a standard rate turn. I would argue it is a simulator. The limitation of user controls are DELIBERATE and come from THE MIND OF A TALENTED AND PASSIONATE CFII. Every mission restart, starts with a needed turn toward the fix and finite time to figure out what to do upon arrival. In the time it takes to play a game of solitaire, you can challenge yourself to a hold with enough time to enter it, and figure out the wind until your inbound leg lasts one minute!

I bought this after getting a bit rusty with radial interceptions and hold entry’s and this app is brilliant! It’s really easy to use and had me back up to speed in no time. Even with the sophisticated aircraft systems we use nowadays it’s nice to know you can still revert back to basics of you need to! I think it would be great practice for anyone studying for their IR or perhaps an airline assessment sim. Looking forward to the new features in the next update!

I am happy that you will be adding NDB and the heading bug too! VOR Tracker is a very nicely designed app that works well on both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air running iOS8. The layout is great and the app is intuitive with brief instructions that keep it simple to use. The main content of the app includes training for both holding and interception of radials in the form of “missions” and the ability to manually create your own by modifying inbound course and wind. The developers have also catered for both ends of aviations by allowing you to choose between using an RMI or an HSI, and select aircraft speeds between 90kt (props) and 180kt (jet). All in all, I highly recommend this app for new pilots training for their instrument rating and also for qualified pilots flying on the line. As an Airbus pilot, it would have been great to have had this app whilst i was training and I now find myself practicing with it for that occasion when the automatics might fail!

Crack open a book and learn about VORs, intercepts, and holding patterns, first. If you don’t know the academics then you will be lost even with a working VOR. This app will cement the concepts! Perfect for the IFR student pilot and the seasoned IFR pilot. Better than any stupid mind numbing game you might being playing, now. You could be honing your pilot skills with this app instead. Exactly according to the description, VOR-Tracker is the ideal training tool for the basic IFR skills of flying and calculating a holding pattern, it’s entry and intercepting radials. Being an airline pilot for several years, I use it to keep my skills up. Modern commercial aircraft are capable of managing those tasks automatically. But to my opinion a pilot should always be able to solve these tasks. A few minutes with this App now and then, will keep your skills up to date.
